The Basketball Jones and their pick up all-stars

J.E. Skeets lists the posssible characters one would encounter at pick-up basketball games here

check it out for a good "chuckle"

what if Jones turns out to be Raja 2.0

Unrestricted free agent Jumaine Jones has signed:

Everyone will "live" on the wing in peace in Phoenix leaving Amare to battle it out down low as the rotations begin on the perimeter

Jones, a first round (27th) pick of the Atlanta Hawks in 1999 (class of Brand / Francis / Baron / Odom / Wally / Marion / Artest and Kirilenko) is coming off a career year in Charlotte with the injury "snakebitten" Bobcats where he saw plenty of action. He played in 76 games, started 46 of them which gave him a 27.5 min/game average mostly thanks to Gerald Wallace injuries and Kareem Rush finding the "doghouse"

It should be interesting to see if Jones (who at 6'8 plays much smaller) can learn how to mix it up a la Marion, we know he can finish and from 3pt land... well he shot 34% last year (making 1.5 of every 4.4 attempts) but the Suns will need him to claim more boards and his jumper would need to improve

While everyone is saying: "he ain't no slouch" there remain only a few more free agents out there to pick up (among notables; Bonzi, Melvin Ely, Reggie Evans)

In the meantime, let's see if Jumaine can still run

the Magical Worlds

Eight teams remain:
  • Argentina
  • U.S.A.
  • Lithuania
  • France
  • Greece
  • Germany
  • Turkey
  • Spain
But one could argue that the team that has benefitted the most from this year's World Championships has got to be the Orlando Magic who have three players participating in the tournament. The Orlando Sentinel interviews the Magic's GM, Otis Smith:

Man-Child Dwight Howard, one of the few big men on the roster is having a solid extra curricular off season on team USA despite playing only 14.6 mpg (2nd among big men to Brand).
Fellow frontcourt mate to Howard is Darko Milicic who at only 21 years of age has emerged as his nation's team leader and has posted solid numbers leading the team in minutes, rebounds and blocks (tournament leader) and is second on his team in points and surprisingly...assists.

Carlos Arroyo, the Puerto Rican point guard, lead his team in minutes, points, assists, and challenged for the lead in rebounds making a solid case for a bid as a starting NBA point guard with an assist to turnover ratio of 0.6

the Sentinel's Tim Povtchak proposes that the Magic trade Dooling to the Heat for Doleac he tries to save face and finishes with a flourish in what many are hoping to be true:

MVN's Believing in Magic has the player highlights and the Magic's perspective be sure to check out what Todd has to say over there

Raving over Rajon Rondo

Boston's Scott Souza continues the praise that Rajon Rondo is garnering as the season slowly approaches. After a successful pre-draft camp and a more impressive showing at the Summer League, Rondo, perhaps the first true point guard drafted this year is turning out to be the steal of the first round going 21st overall after the Celtics traded down from seventh pick in the acquisition of another point guard Sebastian Telfair with the Portland Trailblazers.

Blogosphere's post of the week

For this week I would mention as post of the week (yet once again), Henry Abbott's True Hoop.com as he looks at something that has the potential to be quite controversial in his defensive analysis of Carmelo Anthony:

Abbott is becoming renowned for in his "investigative blogging", this time he tests the theory that 'Melo plays poor defense with something other than simply crunching stats, he calls upon the help of Synergy Sports (think of a TiVo-like service for basketball strategists-go here for more C|Net News.com

Before relying on video replays Abbott sugarcoats that what we have seen from Carmelo Anthony during the World's has been an all out effort that could best be described as:

But what it boils down to is:

(Abbott boldly comes to the conclusion) that in the past (playoff games against the Clippers) 'Melo would; often get caught in "no man's land", be out of position on double teams, rarely work his way through picks, never stepping up to challenge on the perimeter

All signs of a lack of effort early in his career but then again as he reminds us and as we look forward to the coming season, maybe that "something" has clicked inside of Carmelo Anthony and he's turned it all around

Leaving us with Hope and the Nugg Doctor

the power of the Dark Side

Beginning to get a feeling that the player agents are pulling some strings when we start hearing of stories like:

as they try to stay out of trouble because they are not participating in the World's
who you can bet is breathing a huge sigh of relief as Tony's gonna be OK

look for JoHo to show his Mojo

Josh Howard has one year left on his rookie contract, if by the start of the season he remains unsigned he is slated to become a restricted free agent next year. The Dallas Morning News sent out a "feeler article" placing him within the price range of Tayshaun Prince's 5yr/$47.5 million contract, a fair estimate one would think but as Howard says:

"No disrespect to him," Howard said,
"but he doesn't do the same thing for Detroit that I do for Dallas
"

So is there a difference between the two?

Josh Howard-Basketball-reference.com
Tayshaun Prince-Basketball-reference.com

The two players play on teams that have a much different style of play so their roles and what is expected of them is very different, Howard will score, rebound and steal more than Prince but the blocks and assists favor Tayshaun. Josh has emerged as a scoring option for the Mavericks while Prince's role on the Pistons is more of a defensive closer. The biggest difference is in the number of games missed to injury. Tayshaun Prince is coming off three seasons in a row in which he has not missed a game while after his first three seasons Josh Howard missed 15 in his first, 6 in his second and 23 games in his most recent season.

Leaving the upcoming contract year an extremely important one for Howard, one that may settle any doubts and decide the market that a Josh Howard type of player coming into his prime may claim.

Or he could pull a Nene and walk straight to the bank despite any effort or possible disappointment that might affect his already soaring market value.

the importance of Zo is shaping the East

  • As the off-season dust begins to settle the Champion Miami Heat see nothing wrong with the team, Zo it zeems that, Zo will be brought back to Miami to groom Barron/Doleac and sub for Shaq when he goes down.
  • The Mavericks have gone an ocean rescue mission and signed players who were still in limbo, notably;
    • NBDL'er former T-Wolves project Ndudi Ebi
    • St. Joseph's...Pat Carroll
    • two undrafted small guards NorthEastern's 5'11 Jose Bareas and Memphis' 6'2 Darius Washington

  • Ricky Davis visits his native Las Vegas and all the Las Vegas Review Journal can''t help but remind us the Ricky Davis in 2003:
  • Harrington himself has completed the sin-and trade (not a typo) and has called off the return trade to Indiana (a familiar place and a situation he understood), after not feeling the love $vibe$ like he was from other pursuers,
"I want to be somewhere I'm wanted,
and these other teams are really interested
"

Starbury has shares in Wal-Mart

As Stephon Marbury met the press to introduce his $14.95 sneakers:

Lonny Baxter wants to finish his career overseas

After signing a one year contract last month with Italian team (Montepaschi Siena) former NBA player Lonny Baxter is doing everything in his power to get them to sign him to an extension and keep him overseas by headlining the news with a shooting near the White House.

Lonny Baxter was a 15ppg and 8rpg in college at Maryland and after being drafted in the second round by Chicago he has bounced around since then (Toronto, Washington, Panathaikos [Greece], NOOCH, Houston, Charlotte).

rookie photo shoots

While most team blogs are posting their rookie photos The Basketball Jones' J.E. Skeets offers a tongue in cheek lesson in photography in his: "How to take the perfect rookie portrait" post.

NBA.com meanwhile offers up the latest rookie report as they interview some of the picture targets here noting that some of them are wearing their team jerseys for the first time.

Go here for the official thing:

SI.com interviews Raptorblog's Scott Carefoot

Feeling a little out of touch with what has been going on in Raptorland this off-season? Well, Kelly Dwyer from SI.com interviews the owner/author of Raptorblog.com, Scott Carefoot here and brings us up to date with the change of personnel (from Colangelo and Gherardini to T.J. Ford and phenom Andrea Bargnani) and the direction the team is now headed in as they try to make the playoffs again with a completely revamped lineup.

Nothing to see here Mac

After drafting Marcus Williams and reportedly signing Eddie House, The Sporting News is reporting that Jason Kidd's backup is no longer needed:

"Nets PG Jeff McInnis has been told to not even
think about reporting to camp this fall. McInnis,
who has worn out another welcome, is entering the second
year of a two-year, $7 million deal New Jersey
hopes to close out soon with a buyout
"

McInnis was signed as a free agent after being traded from Portland to Cleveland for Darius Miles, the soon to be 32 year old had knee surgery in last January and played in only 28 games last season where he mostly served as a cheerleader to fellow Tarheel; Vince Carter.

Nets Daily brings up a interesting point, if they are unable to trade him away:

may the casualties begin

The first casualty of team USA is Gilbert Arenas as he is sent packing after suffering a groin strain during practice. Given his history no chances are being taken and he will be seeking treatment upon his arrival back home.

"We know Gilbert is really disappointed, he's done a great job.
It's an unfortunate situation but he is not going
to be able to continue on," managing director
Jerry Colangelo said. "We're concerned because he
has had a history regarding groin pulls. This is a
precautionary move but it is important that he
return home and get treatment
"

Interestingly Arenas has been averaging only 11 minutes per game in the tune-ups leaving the door open for the other point guards to step right in and claim the spot (Kirk Hinrich and Chris Paul even possibly Dwayne Wade)

Jersey's Nets quietly changing their tune

With moves that don't necessarily grab headlines and letting the free agent market quiet down the New Jersey Nets are quietly going about their business changing the "look" of their team. Today as they released (buyout) Zoran Planinic, the one time 1st rounder (22 overall) is getting crowded out by draft picks as reported by NetsDaily and heading back to Europe to play for Tau Ceramica... according to the NYPost.

"Ilic will be the fourth rookie on the 14-man
roster along with Marcus Williams,
Josh Boone and Hassan Adams.
"

and reminds us that:

"So yes, the Nets hope to land an experienced
swing player or backup point. Candidates remain
Eddie House, Kareem Rush and Milt Palacio
"

The Nets seem to have gone with youth in the hopes that they'll be able to keep pace with their version of a fast break team in the eastern conference.

Only to then dump those that can't keep up.

1 for 1: Ruben Patterson for Joe Smith

The Milwaukee Bucks have traded Joe Smith to the Denver Nuggets for Ruben Patterson. The two players find themsleves in similar situations as they are into the final years of their contracts and are now 31 years old but Smith is an 11 year vet while Patterson has 8 years experience.

Joe Smith probably felt unwanted since the Bucks made a move to acquire Charlie Villanueva from the Raptors for T.J. Ford a day after the draft. Denver's frontcourt suddenly got increasingly deep with Camby, Nene, K-Mart, Sampson and now newcomer Joe Smith and can afford to let Reggie Evans walk away but are probably looking for some backcourt help.

Milwaukee on the other hand acquires a capable defender in Patterson (self-proclaimed Kobe-stopper) that will presumably be backing up both Redd and Simmons, although it may be in the Bucks interest to finally work teen Euro-sensation Ilyasova and rookie David Noel into some minutes.

An interesting situation and a decent trade for both teams who now have at least some guarantees if and when the injury prone starters go down.

the fragile ecosystem

After finally getting power back (5 days) after a freak storm passed thru the area downing trees over power lines and such but the weather since then has been pleasant so the time away from the routine (priorities change trust me) was a welcome change of pace (I am sure my son apreciated it-more time for him)

over that time well a few things have happened

  • NBA board of governors approved some rule changes: ie.) playoff seeding, timeouts, and playoff roster size
  • the NBA released the upcoming season schedule as well as what they consider to be the most interesting of matchups as some early preseason games outside of the U.S. beginning with the Sixers in Barcelona on October 5th and the official season getting under way on November 1st with an onslaught of 13 games on opening day
  • The Wizards signed Deshawn Stevenson leaving Jared Jeffries to go unmatched to the Knicks as they get set to lose some of their loose change
  • Al Harrington is still in limbo
  • the Bucks lose Jiri Welsch to Spanish league
  • Pargo goes to the travelling Hornets for some third stringin'
  • Reggie Evans wants to cash in
