Lebron rallies troops to a win over Suns

In the fourth game of a six game road trip the Phoenix Suns dominated the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first half by shooting 66% only to see Lebron James turn it up a notch as the Cavs rallied to win at home. The Suns faced a different team in the second half as Cleveland inserted Varejao into the mix in place of Ilgauskas who proved to be ineffective against a smaller Phoenix lineup. Sending the energetic Varejao to the top of the key to guard the charging Steve Nash, Cleveland forced Phoenix to miss 15-18 shots. With both Kurt Thomas and Boris Diaw in foul trouble Lebron James, who was guarded for most of the game by Shawn Marion, scored 32 points in the second half and finished with 44pts 11rebs 7ast and one game changing block on Barbosa that led to yet another viciously thunderous highlight dunk by the King with 6:26 remaining. But the difference of the game was the 15 offensive boards that Cleveland had as they exploited the rebounding weakness of the Suns.

New look T-Wolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves have undergone a transformation rarely seen. Back in 2004 the starting five looked like this:

C. Olowokandi
PF. Garnett
SF. Sczerbiak
SG. Sprewell
PG. Cassell

This year's version is now completely retooled with only one member remaining.

C. Blount
PF. Garnett
SF. Hassell
SG. Davis
PG. Jaric

So far this season, the soon to be 30 year old, Kevin Garnett has continued to put up All-Star numbers and is averaging a double double in ppg and rpg, his averages are down from last year but they are still over his career averages in almost every category:

22.2ppg +
11.3rpg +
79%ft +
33%3pt +
53%fg +
4.7apg +
1.3spg -
1.3bpg -

+=over avg
_=under avg

Which is why I fully agree with what McHale is doing over in Minnesota he has transformed this team into a team that rides its superstar to the end. Kevin Garnett is still worth an investment and is the kind of player you can build a team around. So the team they present to us is a team that is able now to run with the best in the west. Ricky Davis although maybe not quite the pure shooter Wally once proved to be, he is a more proven finisher who will give to Garnett the energy he needs to stay motivated. Defensively a duo of Davis and Hassell should be able to stop any guard in the western conference. While Jaric just towers over most point guards and Hudson/McCants off the bench in relief gives them a speedier look on the floor as well. In the frontcourt, Blount and Griffin have proven at least to have more of an offensive game than past centers Olowokandi and even Nesterovic despite their rebounding negligence.

This is the kind of stuff you like to hear from a teammate too:

"I've wanted to be here for the last five years,"
Davis said. "(Minnesota vice president of operations)
Kevin McHale has been working to get me and I hope
to pay him back for his confidence in me"

"He was everything I anticipated," Garnett said.
"He's energetic, he keeps going -- he was Ricky Davis.
When you get Ricky Davis, you get a high-energy player,
a guy who plays hard for 48 minutes.
"

Put all of this together and I would suggest to McHale to push for a uniform change to really get into the minds of both the fans and the players that this is a new group of players with loads of talent that are able to compete even dominate most teams in the western conference.

Think positive right...?
Hehe.

Free Tskita

Mike D'Antoni, the head coach of the Phoenix Suns, looks to have been keeping his eye on Nikolai Tskitishvili, and proceeded to acquire him as for a 2nd round draft pick:

Don't get too excited now this trade, because apparently it was only a precursor to the bigger seven player trade that occured later the same day while the Suns on the other hand:

Celtics send Davis, Reed, Banks and a Blount to T-Wolves for Wally, Jones, and some Kandi

Midway through the 2005 season two teams playing below a .500 clip have looked to shake things up by swapping swingmen and centers. The Minnesota Timberwolves have sent Wally Sczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi, Dwayne Jones and a conditional first round draft pick to the Boston Celtics for Ricky Davis, Mark Blount, Marcus Banks, Justin Reed and two second round draft picks.

Boston, who is 8 games under .500, pick up Wally who should complement their star player, Paul Pierce much better than the outgoing Ricky Davis. While "the Kandi-man", a former first overall pick is a free agent at the end of the season, comes to a team that just:

"clear(ed) playing time for young big men Al Jefferson and Kendrick Perkins"

"The Celtics were comfortable adding Banks
and Reed to the deal because Ainge and Rivers
see more potential in rookies Orien Greene and Ryan Gomes
"

Minnesota whose record stands at 19-21, welcomes Ricky Davis to the mix, filling the void at shooting guard when Sprewell was let go. Davis instantly makes the T-Wolves that much more athletic giving them at the same time a better two way player than Sczerbiak. While Blount has proven this season to have more of an offensive game than Olowokandi.

Time will tell, enjoy the ride.

Raptors show Babcock the door

Rob Babcock, the former VP of player personel in Minnesota and now former GM of the Toronto Raptors was thanked for his services after a brief yet tumultuous run atop the organization. He will be replaced on an interim basis by Wayne Embry who served the Raptors as "senior basketball advisor". It seems the Raptors have found someone to blame for their poor play and bad luck of late perhaps even blaming Babcock for the embarassment of falling victim to the Kobe Bryant show last Sunday night.

The man with a 3 year plan was cut short almost half way in, the moves made this year were decent ones; his draft picks have blossomed when at one point because of the other picks available they were viewed as blunders, and his trade of Rafer Alston for Mike James is now viewed as a (lucky?) stroke of genius. Yet the Vince Carter trade is the move that did him in, mid-season last year Babcock traded an undervalued/underperforming Vince to the New Jersey Nets for Eric Wiliams, Aaron Williams, Alonzo Mourning (who never reported to the team) and a pick. Ever since that time the writing has been on the wall and Bobcock's future has been in jeopardy.

Richard Peddie, the head of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment goes on to justify the timing of the dismissal by stating:

Pacers can't stay out of headlines as Jermaine O'Neal hears a pop

Just when things looked to be back on track in Indiana with a trade imminent Jermaine looks down at his groin and... "POP! goes the weasel!"

"We sure have had enough bad luck for a year.
I'm really, really concerned. I heard it pop.
Hopefully, I won't need surgery." -- Indiana forward
Jermaine O'Neal,
who may have torn a groin muscle in the fourth quarter
of the Pacers' fourth straight loss, 96-66 at Cleveland on Tuesday night.
"

"I heard it pop; obviously that's not a good thing,
" O'Neal said. "Right now I'm concerned about that.
If it's a tear, we want it to be a low-grade tear

Wednesday's loose ballz

  • the Bulls started Tyson Chandler at PF with Othella Harrington in the middle which is why they need to pull a trade off for a legitimate center
  • the Hawks thought they might be able to make a center out of Pachulia, now he's getting tired and needs help before he gets hurt
  • the Wiz get it done with less help from Arenas than we're used to as they push around the Celtics.
Jamison is back to form with : 26 pts 9 rb 4-5 3pt 6-7ft 3ast 3st
Haywood must've had some coffee: 21pts 7rb
Pierce goes 5-13 from free throw line gotta mean something is he losing his focus
Delonte West needs to get to the line more to be complete: 10pts 9ast 5rb

  • Keith Bogans joins fellow Bobcat Gerald Wallace on injured list in Charlotte who is really hurtin' now which is too bad because if any one could be active right now on the trade market right now if everyone was healthy is them
  • besides Kobe, who hasn't played since that famous Sunday night, is anyone hotter than Sacramento's Mike Bibby witness tonight at MSG: 35pts 10ast 5rb but the surprise has got to be Mo Taylor's: 21pts 12rb 5-6ft
  • Surprise scoring trends continued for Seattle against the Utah Jazz:
Luke Ridnour: 17pts 7ast 2 rb
Robert Swift gets start in the middle and gives them: 6pts 12 rb 2blk
Andrei Kirilenko responded with the usual: 24pts 10 rb 6ast

  • standouts from the Grizz / T-Wolves game:
Shane Battier: 13 pts 8 rb 5 blk
Pau Gasol: 30pts 8rb 6ast 12-12ft
Kevin Garnett: 29pts 9rb 3ast 2st 10-11ft
Mike Miller: 18pts 7rb 3ast 5-63pt
Rashad McCants: 14pts 5rb

Reactions to...well...you know...the trade...?!?

Here are some reactions to the Artest trade :

"We're glad this is over with," Pacers president Larry Bird said. "We wanted to be patient with this one because Ronnie is a heck of a player and someone's always going to take a chance on someone like that."

"We're gamblers. So we're going to take a chance on him," said Kings co-owner Gavin Maloff, who also owns a casino with his brother, Joe. "We want to look forward, otherwise we wouldn't have made this happen"

"It's a new chapter in Sacramento's basketball history and hopefully it'll be a successful one," co-owner Joe Maloof said. "He's a terrific athlete, we all know that. He's one of the top 15 or 20 players in the league, in our opinion anyway, and he brings it every night.
"

"Obviously, we’re very happy about getting a player of Stojakovic’s caliber,” Bird said. “He gives us another dimension on the outside and hopefully that opens things up in the middle"

the Undone Deal: Artest for Peja

I admit I got sucked into the trap when I heard that Artest had been sent to Sacramento for Peja but I should have known this debacle was far from being over as Steve Kerr at Yahoo!Sports says:

"The latest episode of "As Ron Artest' s World Turns"
took another twist Tuesday, with Artest informing
the
Sacramento Kings that he didn't want to play
for them after a deal had been agreed upon
with the
Indiana Pacers earlier in the day"

But wait today is another day and now:

Pending league approval, yesterday it looked like it was gonna be Peja to the Kings for the Pacers' Ron Artest an interesting choice to say the least for Larry Bird. I imagine the reason it took so long is because they wanted to make sure that Peja would commit to the Pacers (long term contract) or else I can see no reason why a deal like this would not have been concluded long ago.

It was six weeks ago on Dec. 11 that Ron "Ronnie" Artest came out of the closet and floored the Pacers franchise with a trade demand under the pretext that he needed a change of scenery in order for him to get over the "incident" that has been haunting him and his image:

Not sure he would have been shooting more often in Sactown with others who have proven to have more offensive game than Artest (who has two years remaining on his contract) but he would have run the floor much better than Stojakovic, who,

"will be a free agent in July and the Kings,
with roughly zero shot at keeping him after Tuesday's events
"

but still I'm not convinced because as Marc Stein at ESPN.com says:

I guess we'll see how good RonRon is, unless they decide not to put him in the starting rotation (which would be like a slap in the face).

Indiana, who is just not playing the same since Artest made his trade demand:

Stojakovic, (who has a contract option to opt out of his contract at the end of this season), goes to a team with an even slower pace than the Kings...the Pacers, where he should fit in perfectly in the half-court offence. Defensively though Indiana, is gonna find it tough against the speedier forwards.

The Pacers are too close to contention in the Eastern Conference to let the door of opportunity shut on the team that has undergone so much turmoil.

Employeee #8 drops 81pts

81 pts

Players of the caliber of Kobe Bryant define a generation, he will be remembered for the feat he accomplished on Sunday night for years (if not for decades) to come.

As Scott Carefoot at Raptorblog reminds us in his account of the game which had the Raptors leading at one point by 18:

A turning point in the game I found to be in the third quarter as Kobe was heating up and sparks were beggining to fly he passes it to Lamar Odom on his left who then with a resounding DOH!!! steps on the line out of bounds turning the ball over, but Craig Kwasniewski at The Association says it best as Kobe took the game into his own hands:

Iguodala buzzer beater wins the game for Sixers

In a game that looked like a blowout from the onset, the T-Wolves allowed the 76ers to climb back into the game with 31 fourth quarter points getting close enough to win it on the final posession as Webber missed a layup in Eddie Griffin's face and swatting left hand. A deflected rebound sends the ball to Iguodala, who in mid air fired a right handed floating shot that found the net as time expired.

The Philadelphia 76ers who trailed the entire game and at one point were behind by 19pts should never have been allowed to get this close. Double team after team double team smothered Kevin Garnett who could muster only 13pts on 5-15 shooting and never got the ball in his hands when it counted.

The Timberwolves played like they never felt threatened by the Sixers who sneaked up on them at the end and lacked that killer intinct thereby deserving the loss as they watched Iguodala rush to the locker room with Iverson on his back to watch the AFC conference title game.

Missing in Action

Offering sneak peeks at their potential in the past many of the following are struggling to say the least and are borderline candidates for posterizing milk cartons:

  • the New Jersey Net's offseason acquisition of Marc Jackson does not seem to be working out thus far as his minutes have gone down from 24 to 13 mpg therefore no surprise his points are dropping from 12 down to 5 ppg
  • Jerome James is in limbo with 9 min per game (but cashing in those paycheques)
  • Kendrick Perkins needs to find an offensive game in the chances he's getting, his minutes are up but the results are not
  • Luke Jackson was the 10th overall pick in 2004 and seems to have no place in Cleveland and has alot to prove
  • Tyson Chandler was given more responsibility by GM Paxson but is playing like he doesn't want any and has proven that he has no offensive skills
  • Quentin Richardson seems to like the west coast better
  • the Miami Heat certainly expected more production from James Posey
  • Jared Jeffries has proven to be too soft for his size needs to get aggressive
  • Antonio Daniels can't find his rhythm in the Washington offense
  • Tim Thomas has disappeared
  • Voshon Lenard's waiting for the Nuggets to release him
  • Lorenzen Wright despite his lack of production the Grizz are still dangling him out there as trade bait
  • whether its foul troubles or injuries hampering Stromile Swift he has had only one game that has matched the expectations coming into his free agent addition to the Rockets and that was back on Dec. 28 where he had 26pts and 13 rebs (and is now out with a scratched cornea that is now infected)
  • Carlos Boozer must be cursed, ever since he backtracked on his promise to resign with the Cavs and dashed off to Utah instead he's played only 51 games for the Jazz and has yet to play this season sidelined with a "nagging" hamstring injury
  • should any credit be given to the Cavaliers for having not yet given up on Damon Jones who suffice to say has simply not delivered this season, he most certainly was not brought in for his playmaking or passing but as a 3pt threat yet to date he's averaging 35% from beyond the arc
  • the Clippers surely expected more from Chris Wilcox but he has yet to deserve the minutes and now with Zeljko Rebraca coming back from his irregular heartbeat his place on the greatly improved contending western conference team is surely in question

wednesday's loose balls

  • in the Grizzlies win over Sacramento, Mike Miller had his first triple double; 21pts 10ast 10reb while going 4-9 from beyond the arc but what I found most interesting in Memphis' convincing 14 point victory is the fact that Lorenzen Wright played only 9 minutes giving a chance to rookie Hakim Warrick to show what he can do and he responded in turn with 16pts and 8 rebounds
  • Cleveland lost to the Knicks Tuesday night as they both shot just over 20% from three point land but the Cavaliers (6-28 3pt shooting) were highlighted by the struggling Damon Jones who is aware of his troubles:

"Cavs guard Damon Jones went 1-for-5 on 3-pointers,
and is just 6-for-37 on 3s in his last seven games.
"I'm officially in a slump," Jones said"

  • Charlotte had a hard team beating the Rockets who were without 5 of their players (T-Mac, Yao Ming, Derek Anderson, Jon Barry, Stromile Swift) and when they took them to double overtime Juwan Howard and Rafer Alston fouled out as well:
" We have an All-Star team on our bench,
but the more we dwell on that,
we lose focus on what the healthy
guys have to do," Houston's
David Wesley said. "
  • gotta love overtime as Denver squeaked by Phoenix in triple OT without Marcus Camby or Kenyon Martin as both Eddie House and Shawn Marion failed to tie it up at the end for an undermanned squad who played only seven players while losing Diaw and Nash who fouled out
  • the Elton Brand versus Dwight Howard showdown never materialized as the Clippers' candidate for MVP didn't play for the first time this season because of a bruised hip. Chris Wilcox started in his place and combined with Chris Kaman to shut down the Magic frontcourt. While Jameer Nelson outplayed the struggling Steve Francis yet again.

Week 11 shaping up

While I watch the two hottest teams in the Eastern conference Raptors/Nets game (which is full of controversial calls all going New Jersey's way I might add; from Krstic's rolling picks to Mo Pete and Vinsanity slapping each other silly, to technicals being handed out left and right) allow me to highlight some notable matchups in week 11:

Tuesday: NJ @ San Antonio
Wed: Milwaukee @ Indiana
Thurs: Det @ San Antonio
Golden State @ Phoenix
Cleveland @ LA Lakers
Friday: Denver @ Minnesota

Good game. Tough loss for the Raptors who played their hearts out.

is Hill over the hill?

As the Orlando Magic continue to ride the fence (make a move or wait) Grant Hill complicated things further Friday night against the New Jersey Nets when he frustratingly pulled himself out of the game in the third quarter:

RAPTORS?!?!?!

Just when I thought the future was bright for the Raps, they go and put a string of wins together. It's as if they can't even lose properly. Looking at their recent history of poor management, poor coaching, and crappy players. I thought for sure this would be the year we get a top pick. They sure as hell won't make the playoffs, but you would think that they would at least have the dignity to finish last. Well now that you think about it knowing the luck of the raps', even finishing dead last, the lottery would still be lost. Maybe they realized this and decided playing.
just a thought.
